Last year around this time, the entire world was singing "No No No", foolishly standing behind a certain beehived UK soulster's refusal to get help (Knowing what we know now, we should be ashamed of ourselves). Cut to twelve months later, we'll probably soon all be chanting "Yeah Yeah Yeah" alongside this year's go-to Euro girl with a taste for retro-R&B.
Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy joins a parade of heavily acclaimed soul singers from overseas (Adele, Estelle) destined for international success. Already garnering massive 'Net notice for her stirring debut ballad, "Rockferry", Duffy's career is sure to skyrocket once more and more people get wind of her newest single, "Mercy".
Like "Rehab", "Mercy" is built off a sweaty '60's soul strut that carries so many different layers of infectiousness, you'll find something different to like about it with each new listen. Atop a bopping organ-laced groove, Duffy, sounding like a young Dusty Springfield or Lulu (don't act like you didn't think the same thing), describes how crazy in love she is with some hot catch. "You got me begging you for blessings/ Why won't you relieve me," the chorus hypnotically chants as backing female vocals chime in with those aforementioned "yeah yeah yeahs".
With it's irresistible nostalgic trigger, "Mercy" melts into your brain with such ease, you'll feel like you've been jamming to it for years. Let's just hope this one stays as far away from drugs as possible.
