English singer-songwriter David Ford glances back at the rocky road to a pleasant present in the arms of his lover on the sweeping "It's Alright Now", an intensely moving power ballad that surprisingly hasn't soundtracked a million prime-time dramas as of yet.
The rousing chorus belts that he's alright now, but Ford is almost taken aback by that notion, shocked that his life could possibly conclude on such a happy note. His lilting tenor dipped in a Dylan-esque wryness, David reflects on a past of "sublime self-destruction" in which he trumped most when it came to being a hopeless individual ("I was stupid, I was insensitive/ I was all the things I promised that I never would be/ I've seen a lot of foolish behavior in my time/ But I tell ya, they've got nothing on me"). Unsuccessful in his search for some sort of comfort in drugs (the oh-so-brief high "won't keep you warm at night") and television ("Just some weak anesthetic to numb the senses til you're out like a light"), it becomes clear why the "Debbie Downer" had no expectations of ever reaching a level of bliss in his life.
When he finally does achieve that oft-sought "happily ever after", he is both amazed and appreciative that he was able to overcome the dark cloud hovering over his existence for so long. That's when a backing orchestra erupts into this heavenward soar, illustrating an apex of emotional release as Ford encourages others out of the same dreariness that used to engulf him ("Sing along when your hearts' finished bleeding/ 'Yeah, I'm alright now'").
A captivating capturing of real-world musings bathed in epic indie pop grandeur, "I'm Alright Now" inspires you into believing that no matter how much you think you're life is heading into a dead end, there really can be a light at the end of the tunnel.
