Fingers all cramped from having to snap to every other upbeat R&B tune? Legs tired from being ordered to "walk it out"? Wallflowers bummed that rappers insist on giving you a dance anyway ("Lean Back", "Shoulder Lean", "Lean Like A Cholo")? Can't look at a can of Campbell's without feeling the urge to need "a soda on the side"? Well, the silly dances urban music has been supplying us with recently don't seem at all to be going away anytime soon, not with Cupid on the scene trying to give the Electric Slide a zydeco/ hip hop makeover.
Sounding like the long-lost son of Cee-Lo with a Chubby Checker-like penchant for getting everybody to do what he demands, Cupid quickly asserts he's not a rapper (who thought he was?) before instructing you through the lamest two-step ever over an irresistibly clap-happy tip-toe strut. How something that sounds like it should be playing at a kindergartner's PE class has found it's way into becoming a hit single I'll never understand, but if 17-year-old Sean Kingston can make his way to #1 with his old-man croon, Cupid can go platinum with what's essentially a Southern rap-inflected Hokey Pokey.
It would've been nice getting Billy Ray Cyrus on the remix to show the kids how line dances can really go down, but hype-man DJ Unk and demented D4L stand-out Fabo provide a better musical fit I guess. One day we'll look back at 2007 and wonder what the hell we were smoking. But I digress...now, how did that go? To the left, to the left...
Peep this actually well-edited "Family Guy"/ "Cupid Shuffle" mash:
